A snapshot of our history

Glenelg Lacrosse Club was founded in 1936 by members of the St. Peters Lacrosse Club, marking the beginning of our proud legacy.

Home grounds

Our club has called several locations home over the years:

  • 1936: Camden Oval, Novar Gardens, where early matches were played at the Camden Motor Drome without change rooms.

  • 1937–1997: Wigley Reserve, Glenelg, sharing a basic shed (with cold showers) with St Leonards Football Club.

  • 1998–Present: Barratt Reserve, West Beach, where our modern facilities now stand.

Establishing clubrooms at Wigley Reserve

In 1937, Glenelg Lacrosse Club moved to Wigley Reserve. Initially, members shared a sand-floored iron shed with cold showers. By 1967, under the leadership of then-President Dr. John Thompson, discussions began about building independent clubrooms. The Glenelg Council approved the project on 18 April 1967, and construction began the following year.

The single-storey clubhouse was officially dedicated on 22 September 1968 to honour club members who lost their lives in World War II.

Expanding to meet growing membership

By 1977, the club had outgrown its original clubhouse. Plans for a second storey were initiated with Glenelg Council. After a year of planning, construction was completed, and the new clubhouse was officially opened on 22 April 1979.

Moving to Barratt Reserve

In 1998, the re-development of the Glenelg foreshore prompted the club’s relocation to Barratt Reserve in West Beach. The foundations for the new clubrooms were laid on 9 April 1998, and construction quickly followed.

Today, Glenelg Lacrosse Club continues to thrive at Barratt Reserve sharing a clubroom with the Airport Club. We continue to build on a history of resilience, community spirit, and dedication to the sport we love.

You can find us at Barratt Reserve, where the red drop pin is on the below map.
